No, I’m not cheating on my husband….although I bet that would make for an increase in blog traffic if I said I was!!
I’m talking about my love affair with Photoshop actions.
Holy Michael Jackson, but where have these been all my life??
I always thought I wasn’t a good enough photographer to use actions. I thought you had to actually be trained in photography to understand how to use them. But the reality is: actions can make a mediocre photograph become an amazing photograph. Now, that’s not to say that if you take a picture that looks like shit…it won’t still look like shit, just with a few pretty layers on it. There has to be the basic element of a good picture. But with actions, a good picture is enhanced to become a great picture.
In my house, when I have down time, I make my kids dress up and do photo shoots. My oldest kid moved out as soon as she graduated from high school, and I can’t help but think my photo shoots may have had something to do with it. But my little nugget, the six year old, still loves dressing up and being my model. So today, when I said she and her friend could put on their fancy dresses as long as I could take pictures, she was game.
and then here is the same one after using actions from Paint the Moon and Flora Bella:
The differences can be subtle or they can be full of pop. It’s totally up to me. And I love having that control over the end result!!!
We all know that I’m no computer guru. But I’ve trained myself just enough on Photoshop Elements to be dangerous, and it’s been more fun learning how to use these actions.
If you dabble in photography and have a little working knowledge of PSE, check out some of the free actions, just to get your feet wet. I promise – you will become hooked!!
